AND THE
SOUTH BAY CRUISING CLUB DISCOVERER’S RACE

1. RULES
The Race will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing.
Class rules requiring contestants to be class members will not apply.
The Race is open to members of Bay Shore Yacht Club (BSYC) as defined in the Bay Shore Yacht Club Constitution and By Laws and/or members of South Bay Cruising Club (SBCC).
Members may race their boats which have PHRF handicaps established by a US SAILING recognized PHRF authority, or handicaps which are assigned by the Bay Shore Yacht Club Regatta Committee, or the SBCC Handicap Committee.
Dual memberships shall designate at registration which burgee they are racing under (BSYC or SBCC).
Spinnakers and other headsails with luffs not attached to the forestay shall not be used.
3. SCHEDULE:
0800 Registration begins at Bay Shore Y.C.
(Skippers may register their boats up to 7 days in advance over the phone or by
e-mail to the BSYC Regatta Chairperson --- See Para. 12).
0830 Competitors’s Meeting at Bay Shore Y.C.
(For those boats that cannot make the meeting and change to the sailing instructions
will be brought to their attention by the RC which will fly code flag Lima
which will instruct boats to come within hail.)
0900 Harbor Departures
1000 Warning Signal off Bay Shore Yacht Club
TBD Finish off Atlantique Marina, Fire Island, N.Y.
1600 Bay Shore Yacht Club Fall Rendezvous at Atlantique Marina
4. SAILING INSTRUCTIONS: Sailing Instructions will be available at registration, and online at www.bsyc.com and www.sbccsail.org.
5. VENUE: The venue is Great South Bay between Bay Shore and Atlantique, Fire Island, N.Y.
6. COURSES: Courses will be described in the Sailing Instructions.
7. SCORING: Scoring will be done by the pursuit method based on Time-on-Distance. A boat’s time allowance will be taken at her start so that boats’ finishing position will be their actual finish place. The first place boat will be the winner of their respective organization’s trophy.
8. BERTHING: Boats are invited to berth at Atlantique Marina owned by the Town of Islip at their own expense after the race and join the Fall Rendezvous hosted by Bay Shore Yacht Club and South Bay Cruising Club. Please bring hors d’ouvres to contribute to the festivities. Beverages will be supplied by the Bay Shore Yacht Club and South Bay Cruising Club
9. RADIO COMMUNICATION: The Race Committee will monitor VHF Channel 72.
10. PRIZES: The winners will be announced during the rendezvous and at each Club’s award ceremonies to follow later in the season.
The winner of the Raymond G. Terry Cup shall be a member of Bay Shore Yacht Club.
The winner of the Discoverer’s Race shall be a member of South Bay Cruising Club.
11. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY: Competitors participate in the Race entirely at their own risk. See Racing Rule 4, Decision to Race.

1. RULES:
1.1 The Race will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing except where specifically changed in these sailing instructions.
1.2 Class rules requiring contestants to be class members will not apply. Boats may not protest with regard to class memberships. This changes RRS 60.1a
1.3 Spinnakers, and other headsails with luffs not attached to the forestay shall not be used.
2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS: Notices to competitors will be posted on the bulletin board by the sliding glass door in the Bay Shore Yacht Club junior room, at the BSYC website: www.bsyc.com, and at the SBCC website: www.sbccsail.org.
3. CHANGES IN SAILING INSTRUCTIONS: Any changes in Sailing Instructions will be posted on the bulletin board by the sliding glass door in the Bay Shore Yacht Club junior room, at the BSYC website: www.bsyc.com, and at the SBCC website: www.sbccsail.org.
4. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
Signals made ashore will be displayed from the flagpole in front of the clubhouse.
When AP is displayed ashore “1 minute” is replaced with “not less than 30 minutes” in the Race Signal AP.
When Flag “Y” is displayed ashore, Rule 40.1 applies at all times while afloat. This changes the Part 4 preamble.

6.1 The Class Flag will be Numeral Pennant, “1”, (red ball on white conical flag).
6.2 A blue streamer or some other blue signal shall be flown from the back-stay or end of boom of each boat racing.
7. RACING AREA: The venue is Great South Bay between Bay Shore and Atlantique, Fire Island, N.Y.
8. COURSE(S)
8.1 Start (.5 miles off BSYC at N40-69701, W73.24515)
#11 to Starboard (Green light buoy off Bay Shore in West Channel)
CC to Port (Cross Channel Buoy off Saltaire)
# 8 to Starboard (Red lit buoy between East and West Fire Islands)
Finish between a blue flag on the Atlantique dock and #11 south of
East Fire Island.
Course Distance 5.0 nm
9. THE START
9.1 Races will be started using Rule 26.
9.2 The starting line will be between an orange buoy on the port end, and a staff displaying an orange flag aboard the RC Boat.

11. TIME LIMIT: The Time Limit will be 5:00 p.m. Any boat not finishing by this time will be scored “Did Not Finish”, and be in serious peril of missing the numerous, delicious hors d’ouvres at the dock party.
12. PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS:

14. SAFETY REGULATIONS: A boat electing to withdraw shall notify the Race Committee by VHF or telephone the Race Committee at 516-353-1013 (C) as soon as possible.
15. RADIO COMMUNICATIONS: The Race Committee will monitor VHF Channel 72.
16. PRIZES:
16.1 The winners will be announced during the rendezvous and prizes will be presented at each Club’s award ceremonies to follow later in the season.
